CONSCIOUS ELEVATION
The Soul of the Piece
Stella McCartney's Skyla sandal is a bold and textured reinterpretation of the house's iconic platform. It is defined by a striking contrast between the urban modernity of black Alter Mat—a cutting-edge vegan material made from residues of Italian viticulture—and the raw warmth of a high-density natural cork wedge heel. The fitted ankle strap and sleek front band create a rigorous balance with the imposing architectural base, without the shoe ever losing its visual lightness. This is a sandal that imposes a vertical and assertive silhouette, supported by materials that each have a story to tell.
Its Place in Your Wardrobe
In your fashion library, this Skyla sandal occupies the unique place of a summer statement shoe with double value—stylistic and ethical. Black is the most versatile color for the platform: it transitions from Sunday brunch to Friday cocktails without ever striking a false note. Cork, unlike synthetic rubber, ages organically and develops a slight patina that personalizes the shoe over time. This is the piece you choose when you don't want to choose between style and conviction—an increasingly rare position in luxury, and increasingly precious in a wardrobe built with intention.
Style Notes
-
Controlled Verticality: Pair the Skyla with wide-leg linen pants or flared denim that grazes the floor. The cork platform barely peeks out from under the fabric—this "suspension" effect dramatically lengthens the leg while adding an organic touch that visually lightens the overall look.
-
Texture Contrast: Wear them with a silk or satin midi dress. The matte finish of the black Alter Mat and the honeycomb texture of the cork break up the fabric's sheen—this is the principle of material friction that generates visual interest and transforms a simple look into a texturally rich proposition.
-
Modern Riviera Spirit: Pair them with a structured short skirt or tailored shorts. The platform allows for wearing very short items with controlled proportion—the height is there, but so is the balance. This is the perfect look for outdoor summer events.
The Craftsmanship: VEGEA and Cork—Two Natural Revolutions
The Skyla is a laboratory of sustainable materials serving luxury. The Alter Mat used for the upper is made from VEGEA—a textile developed by Italian designer Gianpiero Tessitore from grape pomace, the solid residue (skins, seeds, stems) generated in astronomical quantities by Italian viticulture: over seven billion bottles produced annually in Italy leave millions of tons of wine waste. VEGEA transforms this dried pomace into textile fibers that, combined with a bio-sourced polyurethane matrix, produce a material with grain, flexibility, and durability comparable to animal leather. The cork for the wedge heel comes from cork oak forests—mainly in Portugal—whose bark is harvested by hand without cutting down the tree, every nine to twelve years. Its unique cellular structure, composed of billions of air-filled cells, gives it a lightness and shock absorption power that no synthetic material can match at equivalent weight. Two materials, one philosophy: luxury that cares for the world in which it exists.
