The Craftsmanship: The RefScale and the Cage Heel Construction
Reformation was founded in 2009 in Los Angeles by Yael Aflalo with a rare conviction in fashion: to make visible what the industry prefers to hide. Every Reformation product comes with a RefScale — a dashboard that measures and publishes CO₂ emissions, water consumption, and waste generated for the manufacturing of that specific piece. For a shoe, key factors include leather tanning (one of the most polluting processes in fashion, traditionally using hexavalent chromium), transport distance from the manufacturing site (here Brazil), and assembly conditions. Reformation works with Leather Working Group (LWG) certified tanneries that limit the use of heavy metals and treat their wastewater. The Daria cage heel structure is, in parallel, a true feat of shoemaking construction. A cage heel is composed of several precisely cut leather strips, which are then assembled around an internal heel mold. Each strip must be anchored both to the sole (at the bottom) and to the shoe upper (at the top), its intersections with other strips fixed by invisible riveting or recessed stitching — any irregularity in positioning would immediately be visible on the final result, as the cage heel is read as a geometric structure whose symmetry is the primary judge of quality. The adjustable ankle strap is then integrated into this structure, positioned to distribute pressure evenly across the strap without the cage deforming when closed.
