The patent calfskin leather is lacquered rather than simply finished — the surface treatment involves multiple layers of transparent coating applied to the natural grain of the leather, which is why the reflection on the Bisou's curved surface is uneven and interesting rather than flat and uniform. The gold buckle on the strap is the only splash of color on the entire black piece: it functions as punctuation, not decoration.
